Thanks annie! Glad we have helped you with your Filipino learning!
Regarding your question, pronouncing "may" as either "may" or "my" is acceptable. Both will do! Salamat!

Hello again. I've been learning Tagalog for a little over a year now and my Tagalog's gotten so much better that I have to give credit where credit is due.

I enjoy the lessons here because they're funny, short, and sweet. Now I know if I'm ever lost or stranded in the Philippines, I'd know how to ask for food (balut, taho, etc), water, and restroom and say my stomach hurts.

My only question has to do with the Newbs: Wi-fi? Libre! episode. In the audio "May wifi" was pronounced "may" instead of "my"; is that correct? Because I thought "Mayroon" was pronounced "my-ro-on". Which one is correct? Thank you.

I probably should've been listening to you guys for months before going on my trip but I still have another 3 weeks to go! I would like to get serious in learning tagalog and wondered if you guys had any suggestions (rosetta stone perhaps?)

Hey Akiten! Yup, it basically has the same use as "ang" in the text here. But the use of "yung" connotes something more specific, as if the focus of the sentence is the bathroom. I guess the example here doesn't really do the meaning justice. Take instead this example. Compare: "Bibili ako ng sapatos." (I will buy shoes.) with "Bibilhin ko yung sapatos." (I will buy shoes.) Although the two sentences basically mean the same thing (I will buy shoes), the second sentence has its focus on shoes, as compared to the first sentence where the focus is the buyer. It's like you've already determined what particular shoes you want to buy by saying "bibilhin ko yung sapatos." When you just say "bibili ako ng sapatos", you're basically saying "I'm going to buy shoes, any shoes at that." The structure is what you'll usually see around focus verbs (note how "bibili" becomes "bibilhin." Hope this helps! - Mickey

Hi! I'm coming back to learning from this site, and I had a question. Is there a way to get all of the PDF's besides going through each and every one of the episodes? Are they complied and hidden somewhere like a pirate's treasure? I would love to have them!

KalyeSpeak! G'day from Brisbane, Australia!

I started listening to you guys about 2 months ago. I have since set the goal to learn each episode off by heart. Hence, I've probably listened to each episode thrice or more (and they never get old). Keep up the great work!

This episode made my day when I came across it. I have spent quite a lot of time in Bohol and am planning to go back there in January for a couple of months. For the past two years, we've hired out a mini bus and taken the extended Boholano family (and friends) around on a tour of the Island. I was keen to hear about more sites of interest in Bohol, but fear that I may have exhausted most of them. But for anyone that is considering visiting Bohol, here is a small list of other places of interest that are a must see!

- Hinagdanan Cave (Nothing short of breathtaking - go for a swim!)

- Punta Cruz Watchtower Maribojoc (Amazing vantage point for Cebu and Panglao)

- Sagbayan Peak is a great place for children as it has a miniature village they can enjoy for hours (if you let them). Furthermore, it still offers the amazing views of the Chocolate Hills and sights to Cebu.

- Chocolate Hills complex near Carmen is a site of awe. Their is literally no end in sight to the sprawling hills of chocolate.

- Lamanok Caves near Anda. We happened to stumble upon this place on boat trip from Guindulman to Cogtong. Lamanok is part of a national park and you are taken on a guided 'eco' tour of the 'Island'. The caves and the stories behind them are fascinating - covering everything from ancient Philippines to WW2 and now.

All of the first four sites you could do in one day. There were about 30 family and friends on the one bus that took us all around Bohol. This cost us about 9000 pesos. A smaller van (that sits 12 squashed/ 8 comfortable) would cost around 4000 to 5000, depending on your bargaining skills. The adventurous might hire a motorbike (much cheaper).

One last thing. I believe that one of the most rewarding experiences of my last trip was to go squid fishing at night. Boholano fishermen are a 'dying breed' of hard working, skilled, subsistence farmers - but above all they are friendly. The best way to do this is to go with a friend and approach a local fisherman. Ask him to take you fishing for the night (in their bambot - outrigger canoe) and offer to pay for fuel [100 pesos] and maybe another 200 pesos for their services. They will be shocked but pleased and honoured to show you their trade. Go out for 3 hours or the whole night, it is up to you! It is literally magical out on the water at night time and for those who make the effort, the beauties of the sea will reward you to no end.

Salamat KalyeSpeak!

The reason we don't include the translations for Try Mo Try Ko is to allow listeners to answer via commenting on the site :) we'll definitely include the correct answers in the comments section, after listeners have had a chance to answer :)

Hey,

Your friend is right. :)

It should be "kailan ang libing." "Kailan" and "Kapag" both mean "when", but they are used in a different manner. You use "kailan" in interrogative sentences/questions. When are you going to school, when is your birthday, etc. You use "kapag" the same way you say, "I'm going to school when it's not raining anymore" - Pupunta ako sa paaralan kapag hindi na umuulan.

For "bahala ka", you use it when you want to leave a matter up to someone. Bahala ka mag-asikaso sa opisina mo - You take care of the matters in your office. If you want to tell someone to take care, as in not to get hurt or whatever, that's when you use "ingat ka."

Hi guys and girls. How is everyone??

I have a question here, hope you can solve it for me.I recently did a couple lesson videos, and a friend of mine watched them, and came back, telling me basically , that what I taught was wrong.A Native Speaker and all, I am sure she is right , but I'm wondering if maybe I am also right. Perhaps it can be said both ways. You all can sort of be my second Opinion doctors of the language .

In the first lesson, I taught that (when is the funeral can be said as "kapag ay ang libing"),she says no, it is "KAILAN ANG LIBING ?" is 1 right? or can it be said either way? would I sound dorky or something in The Phils?

The other Lesson was "you take care. I said( "Bahala ka Mag"),she says no it is
" ingat ka "... Again, can this be said either way,or would my way make me sound dorky or something???

Basta: si Sir Jovit ang pinakamayaman at mas marami ang mga hayop ni Sir Cris kaysa kay Ginang Bernice....sana may ibang raket si Ginang Bernice, kasi may problema siya kung magsasaka lang siya ;) Tama ba?

There is no 'proper' Filipino. Filipino itself is a constructed language heavily based on Tagalog. That's why it's so resented in areas outside of Luzon. It was declared the national language without so much as consulting the rest of the population (particularly Bisaya-speakers), add to that the rather arbitrary refactoring of the alphabet. By removing 'European' consonants like C, Z, Ch, J, etc. they practically assured that future Filipino children would be very bad spellers, used to spelling things exactly as they hear them. I still cringe every time someone writes "dyip", "erpleyn", etc.

Ugh really.

@ Alex
the spelling in slang is usually "syota" but then I've never ever actually had to write it down so it could also be "shota" for all I know. In any case, the reason a girl would not like to be called one is because it is a contraction of "short time" (from its pronunciation "sho[rt] ta[ym]") meaning the relationship with the girl is just a "short time thing" or a fling.

Plus, its just not that good a sounding word.

I haven't gotten the chance to say I really like the new series. It's a bit more challenging for me and I find this very useful.

Anyway, I've never heard that word used for "girlfriend" before this episode. I'm not sure how it's spelled, so I came here to look at the pdf, but I didn't find it. =( I asked my girlfriend about the word and she said it's slang for girlfriend and that I should never use it when I'm referring to her. lol.

I need someone to elaborate...hehe.

Thanks guys! I've been listening to you guys for over a year now and I plan to keep listening for a long time. You guys are hilarious and great teachers.

Could you do a shout out to Levi(in Davao City) and tell her to go out with Steve LoL I think she needs a little push haha! She is cute, interesting, funny, and I really would like for her to say yes. She seems to be on the fence right now. We've known each other for years now. Its time she made the right move and said yes. :) I'll owe ya all dinner, hows that?

Hey! Good job with the translation, just a little tweek:

"Hindi ka LANG gwapo, matalino ka rin" if you say "gwapo lang", it will basically mean the same thing, but it doesn't sound right.

You can also say "Hindi ka lang gwapo, matalino ka pa!" which means the same thing.

Thanks also!

may tanong ako...paano ko sabihin 'you're not just handsome, you're intelligent too' ?

'hindi ka gwapo lang, matalino ka rin' (?).... pati sa english, kung ilagay mo ang 'lang' sa ibang lugar, magbago rin ano ibig sabihin ang phrase? [you're just not handsome, you're not just handsome]

[like in english, if you put 'just' in a different place in the sentence, it changes the meaning of the phrase?]

tnk!

Salamat Raz!

I didn't realised that raw/daw were usually only used for reporting something said to the speaker - I thought it was just 'said' more generally, so the girlfriend could have said it to Chris, or Chris could have said it to the speaker, so your explanation (+ yung babae etc) really clears it up for me! Tnx talaga :)

Cute naman yung site na ito! (tama ba?)

1) Correct
2) Correct
3) Correct
4) Correct
5) INDEED!

It's the girlfriend who like expensive things. It's not really about stereotypes (I didn't actually know that was a stereotype O_O), just a generic reason.

Your problem about the 'niya' part is actually a good thing to point out. 'Niya' is used to refer to a third person, but, in this monologue, the topic is Chris, as the primary third person, and the things he says while there is a secondary 'third person' which is the 'ex girlfriend' whom Chris refers to in things he said to the speaker who is relaying a second hand account. Run-on sentence much?

In these cases, the usual thing to assume is that the 'niya' refers to the topic of the speaker, which is Chris, instead of the topic of the secondary account, which is the girlfriend. In cases like these, the speaker would usually refer to 'the ex-girlfriend' in terms of 'yung babae/girl (the girl)' instead of using 'niya,' which would, by default, refer to Chris.

I'm not exactly sure what makes the 'daw' difficult though? My tip though is that 'daw' or 'raw' is usually used when the 'speaker' is relaying 'something' that 'someone else' told the 'speaker' which the 'speaker' isn't 100 percent certain of. 'Daw' or 'raw' usually refers to the 'someone else' who told the 'something' to the 'speaker'.

Now, it is common to hear, "Ako daw" or "Ikaw daw" etc, wherein there is no specific 'someone else' that told the something. It is implied though that there is something or someone else that told the "Ako (me)" or "Ikaw (you)" whatever it is that needed to be told, whether "you're next", "you're paying," etc. The 'daw' still does not refer to "Ako" or "Ikaw", it refers to an implied unspecified "niya" or "sabi niya".

Anyway, thanks for answering Ignari!

1) The talker spoke to Chris 2) yesterday.
3) He's sad (crying) 4) cos he's broken up with his girlfriend.
5) He loves her, but she likes expensive things, so he's spent all his money

...um. I'm just guessing about if it's Chris or the girlfriend who like expensive things - I would have understood it was Chris, but because you're both guys and it's a filipino stereotype that women like expensive things, I'm guessing that's wrong. How do I tell which 'niya' refers to who, and who the 'daw' refers to?

This is funky guys! Please post more...

Hey guys - great lessons, I've really learnt a lot from them through the past 6-7 months time, which has helped me understand what people around me talk about. One thing I would personally like was a grammar special category. They would be a great addition to your tara let's lessons. Things like when to use ma- or mag- in front of words, when to do that strange repeat-the-first-spelling thing, and stuff like that. Pinoy grammar is really a class of it's own, I simply have trouble understanding how it works.

Thanks for the suggestion Mark!

I guess Mickey "the soccer lawyer" will have to think about what any legal implications might arise from using full songs in the podcast first but that's a project to consider, since movies and songs are one way to practice understanding and appreciating the language. We can definitely work with quotes though and can possibly use YouTube clips for those who visit the site. Expect cheesiness, this path is paved with it. ^_^

I don't handle the iTunes and have never even used it, but I'm pretty sure we can add the dialog to the iTunes description from now on. It can't be that hard, can it? [foreboding]

Hanap means "object of search". It is used in both verbs and nouns.
For example as a noun
The word "hanapbuhay" means "job" but not just as a task but specifically as your source of income or livelihood.

Hanap is also used as a noun in a sort of descriptive way "'Yan yung hanap ko." (That's the object/thing I was looking for)
- 'Yan yung (That is) hanap (what was being searched for) ko ([by] me).

It's also used in verbs
"Hinahanap ka nila." (They're looking for you)
"Ako nakahanap niyan." (I'm the one who found that)

It probably pops up in jobs because of the 'hanapbuhay' usage but also in Filipino sites that help people look for jobs ("humanap ng trabaho" - look for work/look for a job).
It probably pops up in pictures because, I don't know, people take pictures of stuff they find I suppose.

I love your podcast and am learning a lot from it. I think it would be good for you to include popular cultural items like popular Philippine songs and commonly used phrases from recent popular movies or TV shows.

for example "mahal kita kasi" and some popular quotes from "My Amnesia Girl"

I would also like to see the dialogs in the iTunes description.

Sincerely,

I have a question, I hope you all can answer for me. When searching for the meaning of Hanap. I come up with 2 separate answers. First, if you look it up using Capital h you get the meaning as( pictures). But, when you type the word hanap using a small h, you get the meaning as,(jobs).also a noun meaning seeking or income or searching for or even object of search.

So, my question is, does this mean jobs? or Pictures? and how would we use the different meanings.

I've been practicing/learning Tagalog consistently for almost 2 months now and while I've been making a lot of progress I though I should add some podcasts to my arsenal of learning material. I am SO glad I stumbled upon your podcasts two days ago. I was a little skeptical at first but when I accidentally listened to the "Duwende" episode first, I knew I had to listen to more. What's funny is that as soon as I learned the word "duwende", there were some duwendes on TFC, the Filipino tv station. (they were serving people in a place called the Hobbit House in the Philippines) Anyway, you guys are so entertaining and different from other podcasts I've listened to. Maraming salamat po. Keep up the good work. Ingat.

Hey Steve!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'll only be here till the end of the month so i'll be recording as many episodes as possible. :D I hope you will enjoy them!

Regarding your question, did you want to say "you blew me far away"?

In straight Filipino we shall make use of the Filipino word for blow which is "hipan". And the past tense of "hipan" is "hinipan". And then since "far away" sort of acts like an adverb here, we shall make use of the "nang" linker. I can't remember if we've already discussed this word before though, but there you go. So the sentence will constructed as:

"Hinipan mo ako nang malayo." (Verb + doer + [object] + nang + adverb)

Let's try other examples:

The baby cried loudly. = Umiyak ang baby nang malakas.
Juliebeth sang the song well = Kinanta ni Juliebeth ang kanta nang mabuti.
She quickly ate the hotdog. = Kinain niya ang hotdog nang mabilis.

The object is optional here because we can use intransitive verbs here (like "cry").

If you want to say it in Taglish, then you only have to attach the nang+adverb at the end of a typical S+V+O sentence.

You blew me far away. = You blew me nang malayo.
The baby cried loudly. =The baby cried nang malakas.
Juliebeth sang the song well. = Juliebeth sang the song nang mabuti.
She quickly ate the hotdog. = She ate the hotdog nang mabilis.

But try not to use this taglish construction as it sounds really strange and people might think you're a "conyo kid" or a rich Pinoy which a serious identity crisis. Hehe, just use it in case of emergencies.

So there, i hope you learned a lot from this mini-lesson!

Your welcome(walang anuman) Bernice. Tell me more about this Typhoon crisis. I hope things will return back to normal quickly.

I feel so bad for these poor people.I know whats its like. About 5 years ago , we had 4 hurricanes through here, and I lost my house, my daughter narrowly escaped death ,when here house blew down. Only room in the house standing(luckily, they were hiding in that room).

Wow! What a great episode! It has so much filipino culture in it. This is a cultural topic I've been curious about ever since I arrived in PI. Not to mention, Cris is back!!! Instantly my new favorite episode!

Congrats on the engagement Boyet and Bernice! I saw the video on Youtube when they mentioned it on an earlier episode. Simply amazing. I showed it to a friend and she was so overwhelmed by the gesture, she cried. Haha!

Make as many episodes with Cris while you can! When you all come together, your magical humor comes alive. I couldn't keep myself from laughing out loud in the library today! Totally embarrassed myself...but it was well worth it.

Hey, Please do. I would love to see that sequel. Oh and would you mid if I take from your past episodes and do a little skit ? I wish to do a video(that I think you would love) about a past Episode you guys did. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. This would be a full dress take up on the past episode. Don't want to reveal too much, but was thinking of doing it in near future. I spent days sewing up a costume for this one.

Hey guys, thanks for mentioning my name!! I was so happy to hear that.

So that's what taho is. I have seen a few times street vendors calling out taho! taho!. I never knew what it was. I will try next time.

Keep up the good work. You know what? Your podcasts do help me learn Tagalog so effectively. You guys always add funny tones and rhythm to your sentences which really helps me memorize them so well.

Thanks again and looking forward to the next episode!

Great Episode Guys, and girls. Will you follow up later with an episode on size? You briefly talked about asking how much(as in size). So its only fitting to cover a episode on asking someones size or the size of something.

I also thought of a new one that I don't think has been covered yet.Asking (did you hear that?).As if its late at night, you hear a strange sound, and ask your partner (did you hear that?).

Hey you guys! My name is Rosie from New York and I just wanted to say that your podcasts are really great! Although I am a filipina, I didn't grow up with the language and now that I want to learn, your podcasts have been wonderfully helpful!

I just wanted to ask, would be possible to make a separate page on your website for your PDFs?

Spot on.

"Hay nako" shows a form of disappointment and/or shows that one is slightly peeved or pissed.
But again, this depends on the context and how it's said.
For example, a girlfriend might tell her boyfriend, "hay nako." Depending on how she says it, it can indicate that she's really pissed with what the guy said (if she storms out immediately after, for instance) or it can also be a sign of flirting or her being a tease.
