I’ve had a great day listening to podcast after podcast. I REALLY appreciate the website to go along with the lessons and the AWESOME PDFs. You guys created a fun time out of frustrating experience and have my wife cringing with all the street talk lingo I’m picking up from your lessons hahaha. It’s a shame learning tagalog is a struggle due to the lack of good resources. Any Tagalog book I find is full of “deep tagalog” that Filipinos don’t use anymore or full of grammar examples that aren’t even translated into English. How in the world did they forget that this was a language learning book for people who don’t know Tagalog. This is really the only good website I have found for learning Tagalog and you guys are doing it for free. Seriously, that is really admirable and I really thank you all for the time and effort. I have one tiny request though. You might see that I have commented on every podcast that had a broken or mislinked PDF. Is there anyway you could repost ALL the PDFs on one page. That way you don’t need to go through every podcast to check if the link is working. Thanks for all your hard work!

I enjoy the lessons here because they’re funny, short, and sweet. Now I know if I’m ever lost or stranded in the Philippines, I’d know how to ask for food (balut, taho, etc), water, and restroom and say my stomach hurts.

My only question has to do with the Newbs: Wi-fi? Libre! episode. In the audio “May wifi” was pronounced “may” instead of “my”; is that correct? Because I thought “Mayroon” was pronounced “my-ro-on”. Which one is correct? Thank you.

I probably should’ve been listening to you guys for months before going on my trip but I still have another 3 weeks to go! I would like to get serious in learning tagalog and wondered if you guys had any suggestions (rosetta stone perhaps?)

I started listening to you guys about 2 months ago. I have since set the goal to learn each episode off by heart. Hence, I’ve probably listened to each episode thrice or more (and they never get old). Keep up the great work!

This episode made my day when I came across it. I have spent quite a lot of time in Bohol and am planning to go back there in January for a couple of months. For the past two years, we’ve hired out a mini bus and taken the extended Boholano family (and friends) around on a tour of the Island. I was keen to hear about more sites of interest in Bohol, but fear that I may have exhausted most of them. But for anyone that is considering visiting Bohol, here is a small list of other places of interest that are a must see!

- Hinagdanan Cave (Nothing short of breathtaking – go for a swim!)

- Punta Cruz Watchtower Maribojoc (Amazing vantage point for Cebu and Panglao)

- Sagbayan Peak is a great place for children as it has a miniature village they can enjoy for hours (if you let them). Furthermore, it still offers the amazing views of the Chocolate Hills and sights to Cebu.

- Chocolate Hills complex near Carmen is a site of awe. Their is literally no end in sight to the sprawling hills of chocolate.

- Lamanok Caves near Anda. We happened to stumble upon this place on boat trip from Guindulman to Cogtong. Lamanok is part of a national park and you are taken on a guided ‘eco’ tour of the ‘Island’. The caves and the stories behind them are fascinating – covering everything from ancient Philippines to WW2 and now.

All of the first four sites you could do in one day. There were about 30 family and friends on the one bus that took us all around Bohol. This cost us about 9000 pesos. A smaller van (that sits 12 squashed/ 8 comfortable) would cost around 4000 to 5000, depending on your bargaining skills. The adventurous might hire a motorbike (much cheaper).

One last thing. I believe that one of the most rewarding experiences of my last trip was to go squid fishing at night. Boholano fishermen are a ‘dying breed’ of hard working, skilled, subsistence farmers – but above all they are friendly. The best way to do this is to go with a friend and approach a local fisherman. Ask him to take you fishing for the night (in their bambot – outrigger canoe) and offer to pay for fuel [100 pesos] and maybe another 200 pesos for their services. They will be shocked but pleased and honoured to show you their trade. Go out for 3 hours or the whole night, it is up to you! It is literally magical out on the water at night time and for those who make the effort, the beauties of the sea will reward you to no end.

Your friend is right.

It should be “kailan ang libing.” “Kailan” and “Kapag” both mean “when”, but they are used in a different manner. You use “kailan” in interrogative sentences/questions. When are you going to school, when is your birthday, etc. You use “kapag” the same way you say, “I’m going to school when it’s not raining anymore” – Pupunta ako sa paaralan kapag hindi na umuulan.

For “bahala ka”, you use it when you want to leave a matter up to someone. Bahala ka mag-asikaso sa opisina mo – You take care of the matters in your office. If you want to tell someone to take care, as in not to get hurt or whatever, that’s when you use “ingat ka.”

I have a question here,hope you can solve it for me.I recently did a couple lesson videos,and a friend of mine watched them,and came back,telling me basically , that what I taught was wrong.A Native Speaker and all, I am sure she is right , but I’m wondering if maybe I am also right. Perhaps it can be said both ways. You all can sort of be my second Opinion doctors of the language .

In the first lesson, I taught that (when is the funeral can be said as “kapag ay ang libing”),she says no, it is “KAILAN ANG LIBING ?” is 1 right? or can it be said either way? would I sound dorky or something in The Phils?

The other Lesson was “you take care. I said( “Bahala ka Mag”),she says no it is
” ingat ka “… Again, can this be said either way,or would my way make me sound dorky or something???

pero di na ilalagay ko ang mga sagot ko dito…kasi parang ‘spoiler’ para ang mga ibang followers nyo, ok?

Basta: si Sir Jovit ang pinakamayaman at mas marami ang mga hayop ni Sir Cris kaysa kay Ginang Bernice….sana may ibang raket si Ginang Bernice, kasi may problema siya kung magsasaka lang siya Tama ba?

I’m not sure how it’s spelled, so I came here to look at the pdf, but I didn’t find it. =( I asked my girlfriend about the word and she said it’s slang for girlfriend and that I should never use it when I’m referring to her. lol.

I need someone to elaborate…hehe.

“Hindi ka LANG gwapo, matalino ka rin” if you say “gwapo lang”, it will basically mean the same thing, but it doesn’t sound right.

You can also say “Hindi ka lang gwapo, matalino ka pa!” which means the same thing.

[like in english, if you put 'just' in a different place in the sentence, it changes the meaning of the phrase?]

I didn’t realised that raw/daw were usually only used for reporting something said to the speaker – I thought it was just ‘said’ more generally, so the girlfriend could have said it to Chris, or Chris could have said it to the speaker, so your explanation (+ yung babae etc) really clears it up for me! Tnx talaga

It’s the girlfriend who like expensive things. It’s not really about stereotypes (I didn’t actually know that was a stereotype O_O), just a generic reason.

Your problem about the ‘niya’ part is actually a good thing to point out. ‘Niya’ is used to refer to a third person, but, in this monologue, the topic is Chris, as the primary third person, and the things he says while there is a secondary ‘third person’ which is the ‘ex girlfriend’ whom Chris refers to in things he said to the speaker who is relaying a second hand account. Run-on sentence much?

In these cases, the usual thing to assume is that the ‘niya’ refers to the topic of the speaker, which is Chris, instead of the topic of the secondary account, which is the girlfriend. In cases like these, the speaker would usually refer to ‘the ex-girlfriend’ in terms of ‘yung babae/girl (the girl)’ instead of using ‘niya,’ which would, by default, refer to Chris.

I’m not exactly sure what makes the ‘daw’ difficult though? My tip though is that ‘daw’ or ‘raw’ is usually used when the ‘speaker’ is relaying ‘something’ that ‘someone else’ told the ‘speaker’ which the ‘speaker’ isn’t 100 percent certain of. ‘Daw’ or ‘raw’ usually refers to the ‘someone else’ who told the ‘something’ to the ‘speaker’.

Now, it is common to hear, “Ako daw” or “Ikaw daw” etc, wherein there is no specific ‘someone else’ that told the something. It is implied though that there is something or someone else that told the “Ako (me)” or “Ikaw (you)” whatever it is that needed to be told, whether “you’re next”, “you’re paying,” etc. The ‘daw’ still does not refer to “Ako” or “Ikaw”, it refers to an implied unspecified “niya” or “sabi niya”.

I guess Mickey “the soccer lawyer” will have to think about what any legal implications might arise from using full songs in the podcast first but that’s a project to consider, since movies and songs are one way to practice understanding and appreciating the language. We can definitely work with quotes though and can possibly use YouTube clips for those who visit the site. Expect cheesiness, this path is paved with it. ^_^

Hanap is also used as a noun in a sort of descriptive way “‘Yan yung hanap ko.” (That’s the object/thing I was looking for)
- ‘Yan yung (That is) hanap (what was being searched for) ko ([by] me).

It’s also used in verbs
“Hinahanap ka nila.” (They’re looking for you)
“Ako nakahanap niyan.” (I’m the one who found that)

It probably pops up in jobs because of the ‘hanapbuhay’ usage but also in Filipino sites that help people look for jobs (“humanap ng trabaho” – look for work/look for a job).
It probably pops up in pictures because, I don’t know, people take pictures of stuff they find I suppose.

I love your podcast and am learning a lot from it. I think it would be good for you to include popular cultural items like popular Philippine songs and commonly used phrases from recent popular movies or TV shows.

for example “mahal kita kasi” and some popular quotes from “My Amnesia Girl”

Regarding your question, did you want to say “you blew me far away”?

In straight Filipino we shall make use of the Filipino word for blow which is “hipan”. And the past tense of “hipan” is “hinipan”. And then since “far away” sort of acts like an adverb here, we shall make use of the “nang” linker. I can’t remember if we’ve already discussed this word before though, but there you go. So the sentence will constructed as:

“Hinipan mo ako nang malayo.” (Verb + doer + [object] + nang + adverb)

Let’s try other examples:

The baby cried loudly. = Umiyak ang baby nang malakas.
Juliebeth sang the song well = Kinanta ni Juliebeth ang kanta nang mabuti.
She quickly ate the hotdog. = Kinain niya ang hotdog nang mabilis.

The object is optional here because we can use intransitive verbs here (like “cry”).

If you want to say it in Taglish, then you only have to attach the nang+adverb at the end of a typical S+V+O sentence.

You blew me far away. = You blew me nang malayo.
The baby cried loudly. =The baby cried nang malakas.
Juliebeth sang the song well. = Juliebeth sang the song nang mabuti.
She quickly ate the hotdog. = She ate the hotdog nang mabilis.

But try not to use this taglish construction as it sounds really strange and people might think you’re a “conyo kid” or a rich Pinoy which a serious identity crisis. Hehe, just use it in case of emergencies.
